We use the Cutera CoolGlide nd:yag laser for hair removal. It works by an action known as selective photothermolysis, where the laser light is specifically absorbed by the melanin pigments in the hair root, but not the skin. This destroys the hair root in its active phase, leading to permanent reduction of hair growth, A number of treatments may be required, as not all hair follicles are in the same growth phase.
The laser only works on pigmented hairs. It is not effective on blonde, grey or red hairs.
The unique property with this laser system is that it will not harm tanned surrounding skin, as inferior lasers have done in the past.
Laser is light absorption at a specific wavelength so all the energy targets the hair root with minimal impact on surrounding skin.
IPL however is pulsed light, the energy being spread over different wavelengths. While some energy is directed at the hair root, the scatter effect means that some surrounding skin may be affected. This can lead to unwanted side effects and less effective results.
The sensation of light energy can be equated to a flick with a rubber band.
In some areas the level of discomfort is greater than others, but an iced compress and aloe vera provides good relief.
Afterwards the treated area may be red and slightly swollen; this may last up to 3 days.
Dead hairs will literally fall out over the next week to 10 days then you will experience a period of minimal hair growth lasting anywhere between 3 - 12 weeks depending on the area treated.
Almost any area can be treated; however, laser is not suitable to treat nose or ear hairs, and is not recommended for eyebrows.
We recommend no waxing, plucking, or electrolysis for 4 weeks before a treatment but you can shave or cut the hairs.
Treatment costs, estimated time of treatments, suitability, and estimated number of treatments will be discussed at the initial consult.
